Thrifty Thursdays - File Folder Art Journal

I was thinking about what to do with the leftover file folders from last week's Thrifty Thursday file folder mini and I thought about making a simple art journal.  File folders are great for this because they are thick and would be great for painting and inking.  I created this art journal by cutting 2 folders into four pieces that are 5.5 x 11" (with the crease on the middle).  Then I punched two holes and tied it together with string.  And there you have it!  Perfect size for bringing with you so when inspiration strikes you will able to take it out and create!

And don't forget - today is the last day to enter Karen's Creations Giveaway!

File Folder Mini Tutorial

Supplies needed: 3 file folders (need to have scored lines at the bottom - mine are from the dollar store), paper trimmer, paper and embellishments to decorate.

Tutorial: (click on the pictures to enlarge and better see the steps) Step 1: Take out a file folder (you need one with scored lines near the fold).  Step 2: Open the folder - fold the bottom up roughly 4". Step 3: Fold your folder on the outside scored creased to create a spine. (if your folder doesn't have scored lines - create a spine roughly 1")  Step 4: Put your folder into the trimmer and trim at 6" from the outside creases on both sides.  This leaves you with a book that is roughly 7 3/4" tall by 6" wide.

Step 5:  Now you are left with the base of your book - adhere the sides of the folded piece and along the spine to create pockets. Punch holes in the spine (mine are roughly 1" in from the top and bottom)  Step 6: Take your other two folders and cut two pieces that are 7 x 11. (with the center on the fold).  Step 7: Layer the two 7x11 pieces and punch holes that match the holes in your book's spine. Step 8: Thread a piece of ribbon through the pages and the spine to hold them in place.  Tie on the outside of the book.

And if you haven't already - make sure you enter this week's giveaway here.

My Big News and What's New in the Shop

So yesterday I was browsing the craft magazine aisle at my local Barnes & Noble when I saw the latest issue of Scrapbook Trends Create: Mini Albums.  I then embarrassed my husband by snatching it up - flipping through it wildy and upon seeing my mini album jumping up and down in the aisle!  I knew I was getting published but A. Thought it was in August (I apparently got my "A" months mixed up!) B Was still in denial and thought they would find a reason not to publish it and C. It was my first time getting published so I was excited - so what! So that's my big news!  And if you happen to have the magazine or are in a book store check out page 38!

And while you are checking things out - check out what's new in my Etsy Shop:

I have also been creating a lot of custom ephemera kits lately (custom Italy, custom School, custom Patriotic Kit) so if there is a themed you would like to see email me and I may be able to put something together for you!  I added about 20 new items this week so be sure to visit!

Have a great weekend and Happy Easter!!

Thrifty Thursdays - File Folder Mini

It's Thrifty Thursday again!  I made this week's project out of some file folders that I got from the dollar store (but are available at office supply stores or walmart).  I plan on doing a tutorial for it next week so be sure to check back for that!  I would have taken pictures as I made it but I spent the first 30 minutes folding and cutting folders until I found a way to make a book!

THRIFTY THURSDAY NEWS:
I have decided that the last Thursday of the month will be be reader submitted projects.  So if you are thrifty and have a project you have made send me an email at burstsofcreativity(at)yahoo.com with a link to a blog post with your project.  (it doesn't have to be on a Thursday).  Please only submit projects that have been completed in the last month.  By submitting your project you are giving me permission to use your photos.  I will use one photo and link back to your blog (more traffic for you!).  Please send me the links by Tuesday April 26th. Depending on how many submissions I get I may not be able to feature everyone.  I am looking forward to seeing what kinds of thrifty projects you have been creating!

Custom Journal

If you follow me on facebook you know that yesterday I got a huge box of new stuff to play with from two peas in a bucket.  I haven't had a chance to make anything yet so I thought I would share a custom journal I made for a customer a couple of weeks ago.  She wanted a journal that had lots of yellow, polka dots, cherries, and vintage.  I think it turned out great!

Custom journals start at $35 for 25 pages.  To order a custom journal send me an email at burstsofcreativity (at) yahoo.com.  All journals ship free through the month of April!

Sometimes you just need to get away...

Feeling a little burned out I went to spend a couple of days with my sister and nephew last week.  I know every aunt in the world thinks their nephew is the cutest/smartest/whatever "est" - but little Jarmon actually is!  (haha)

I love this photo - it looks like he's trying to catch the bubbles - well... he wasn't - he just wanted to put the wand in the container - he didn't even care about the bubbles!

Thrifty Thursdays - Altered Journal

Happy Thrifty Thursday!  If you follow me on facebook you know that a couple of days ago I made a trip to Michaels and found the most fantastic Vintage Circus items in the their dollar bins.  For this week's project I bought one of the journals and a pack of cards/envelopes.   I started by pulling out some of the paper throughout the book in sections.  I then adhered envelopes and photo mats (made out of a paper bag). I embellished the front with the image from one of the cards matted on crumpled brown paper bag, added eyelets and ribbon and done!  A easy way to turn a dollar bin journal into a fun altered journal that you can add photos and other fun bits from your life!
